Nine years ago, Kevin Morton was shot during an attempted robbery and almost died. He was 22 years old at the time. The surgeon at Detroit’s St. John Hospital, Dr. Dharti Sheth-Zelmanski, along with others, conducted five surgeries over 58 days before Kevin was finally pronounced okay. He underwent a year of rehab, then reevaluated his life’s plans.
He attended Michigan State University and majored in medicine. Before his injury, he said he had considered becoming a doctor himself but did not have any role models active in his life who were involved in medicine who could help guide him. The inspiration and heroism displayed by Dr. Sheth-Zelmanski helped change that.
Now, 31 years old and married with a young daughter, Kevin has finally graduated and is a doctor as well. Not only that, but he is now working at the very same hospital where he was taken as a young man when he was shot. He said he wanted to have a profession where he could help others the way Dr. Sheth helped him.
